Abstract

The conscious utilization of information technologies is as important as learning how to use them. Adults and children are faced with various risks and security threats when using computers and the internet. Factors that determine the usage frequency of information technologies should be examined due to many different reasons that can be faced during internet and computer use such as addiction, violence, uncontrolled shopping, encouragement of alcohol and drug use, communication that can threaten the security of life and property as well as the development of new hackers. In this study, factors that determine the internet and computer usage frequency of adults and children between the ages of 06-15 have been examined using the data acquired from the 2013 Information and Communication Technology Usage Survey on Households carried out by Turkish Statistical Institute (TSI) according to the place of residence. The Information and Communication Technology Usage Survey on Households has been extended to include children in the 06-15 age groups for the first time. Computer, internet and cell phone usage, usage frequency and the reasons for usage as well as relations with the media have been examined in this study for the 06-10 and 11-15 age group distinction in order to be able to observe the differences more efficiently. Ordered logit model has been used in econometric analyses in order to examine the frequency of the Information and Communication Technology Usage on Households. It has been observed that computer and internet usage and frequency increases with increasing household income.
