Alternate to Traditional Goodness of Fit Test with Illustration Using Service Duration to Patients in Hospitals

Ramalingam Shanmugam

Abstract

Often, healthcare administrators seek evidence in data to configure improvements in healthcare services to patients. For this purpose, the underlying probability pattern of the data needs to be identified. The traditional chi-squared goodness of fit test could be used but it requires a minimum of at least five frequencies in each group. Such a requirement is not met in an analysis a patient’s data analysis in healthcare studies. This necessitates a development of an alternate goodness of fit test and it is done in this article based on relationship between the sample dispersion and mean. There are advantages in the new approach of this article and they are articulated with a demonstration using the duration time (in minutes) spent by nurses in various healthcare activities in a hospital or clinic.

Keywords

Dispersion-mean relationship, p-value, statistical power, Poisson, Inverse Binomial, Exponential and Inverse Gaussian distribution.
