Diagonal Systematic Sampling in Two Dimensions

S. Sampath, V. Varalakshmi

Abstract

This paper considers the problem of estimating a finite population total in the presence of linear trend for two dimensional populations. In this paper, the diagonal systematic sampling scheme for one dimensional population has been extended for two dimensional populations involving unaligned-unaligned, aligned-unaligned and aligned-aligned strategies. Suitable estimators for these three methods have been suggested and their efficiencies are compared with simple random sampling and systematic sampling strategies of Bellhouse (1981) for two dimensional populations possessing linear trend. The results of the numerical study favor the use of aligned-unaligned diagonal systematic sampling strategy for two dimensional populations possessing linear trend for almost all the choices of the parameters involved in the model describing linear trend.
