Urgency-Biased Beta Distribution with Application in Drinking Water Data Analysis

Ramalingam Shanmugam, Jagbir Singh

Abstract

The proportion of residents in an urban or rural community with no accessibility to healthy drinking water gets a higher priority to be recorded in a registry. Such worldwide data are called urgency-biased in this article. Consequently, the data are considered to have been drawn from a different distribution rather than the intended beta distribution. The modeling and interpretations of such urgency-biased drinking water data in WHO (2004) report are done with a new version which is named urgency-biased beta distribution (UBD). Properties and applicability of the UBD are discussed. A statistical analysis of the worldwide drinking data reveals surprising results. Some nations are identified to be in need of improving the accessibility to healthy drinking water. The drinking water related policy makers in such nations might find our results useful. The new methodology of this article is a template for those who may analyze similar proportion data in engineering, business, marketing or sociology studies.
