Estimation of Population Proportion of Sensitive Characteristic Using Randomized Response Technique

P. Mukhopadhyay, G.N. Singh, A. Bandyopadhyay

Abstract

Estimating the proportion in a population carrying some sensitive character is a hard nut to break for survey statisticians. Objective of this paper is to estimate the proportion of sensitive character in a population partly from option based responses against a questionnaire given to the respondent through a random device. This, we believe, is a new method and it may be argued that people will be more participative and honest to response against carefully designed questionnaire than they would be to face direct or mirrored sensitive question. Moreover, the success will not be dependent on proper guess of non-sensitive character proportion either. Proposed strategy has been shown to be advantageous over existing methods to a considerable extent. Numerical evidence is also given in support of its efficacy with the help ofempirical studies. Suitable recommendation for the survey statisticians is also made.
