Experiments with Object Detection in Images by Template Matching

This paper present the experimental results of template matching using normalized cross - correlation (NCC) technique for object detection and recognition in developed vision system. The paper also provides the required mathematical model of NCC. To implement this technique, red and yellow coloured circular markers are placed in the environment at particular sequence and sample images are captured by the camera. The template image is obtained from corresponding sample image. Different arrangements have been prepared with coloured markers and tested in MATLAB using template matching and the results are presented. The object detection and recognition accuracy recorded by this technique is found 100 %. The coordinates at peak value of NCC are obtained in experimentation and they can be used for positioning the object in the environment and also can be used for object tracking in real time application.
