Parking Vacancies Detection and Fuzzy Logic based Drivers' Guidance

Imen Masmoudi, Ali Wali

Abstract

The sharp evolution of the number of cars and vehicles in urban areas is causing a major difficulty to the drivers. They should confront the problems of traffic congestion as well as the problem of finding an available parking space mainly during the rush hours. The elaboration
of a smart parking system, able to guide drivers, will preserve time and efforts and will optimize the allocation of parking lots. This paper provides firstly a multi agents approach which relies on the installed video surveillance cameras through several parking stations and roads of the city in order to detect and localise the vacant parking places. It proposes also a fuzzy logic based decision system relying on multi criteria for drivers’ guidance. We aim at providing drivers with smart and relevant service to guide them to the most optimal vacant parking places via a mobile phone application. This decision making is based on multi criteria such as the number of remaining vacant places in the parking stations as well as its distance to the driver’s location, the size of the driver’s vehicle and the real time information about the traffic congestion.
