Reasoning and Evolution of Consistent Ontologies using NORM

G.S. Mahalakshmi, T.V. Geetha

Abstract

This paper discusses the evolution of consistent ontologies during argumentative discussions. The ontologies follow a special structure called NORM – Nyaya Ontology Reference Model based on Indian philosophy which suits knowledge sharing. The goal of argumentation is to share valid knowledge between knowledge volunteers. An argument (or move of the game) is submitted for discussion. The validity of world knowledge embedded in the argument is analysed and the inconsistent information w.r.to one’s own knowledgebase is traced. The inconsistencies are put forth in subsequent counter-arguments (or counter-moves) for discussion. This exchange of arguments and counter-arguments continue until no inconsistent information is received. Thus, invalid and inconsistent information deposited within the ontologies are removed and replaced non-monotonically by fresh and valid belief.
