Effects of National Health Insurance Status on Individual's choice of Healthcare Facility in Selected Regions of Ghana
This study examined the effects of national health insurance status on individual's choice of healthcare facility in selected regions of Ghana. Using a multi-stage sampling technique, the researcher interviewed 1009 individuals who had suffered illness during the three months preceding the interview. Conditional mixed processing model was used to estimate the effect of NHIS status on choice of healthcare facility. The results show that individuals who are currently insured are more likely to visit public healthcare facilities whiles those who are previously enrolled are more likely to visit private healthcare facilities and herbal clinic/hospital. It is recommended that National Health Insurance Authority should increase the integration of private healthcare providers into National Health Insurance Scheme.
